Jake or Daniel, just to clarify, will racers be allowed to carry small portage dollies on board? I don't think anyone will be wanting to drag their stuff to board the ferry back.

Customs

Alaska, like Canada, entry will be a phone call at the finish dock, except our Alaskan brethren will also come down to say hello (we will call them ahead of time to let them know you are coming).

If you are a vessel over 30' you can apply for a decal that will make customs even faster in Alaska. It costs $27.50 and you can apply for the decal here:

Dear R2AK participants and fans,

I'm sure that many of you are aware of the US Coast Guard's recent termination of the Everglades Challenge due to safety and weather concerns. The facts are all still percolating and encumbered by an entire internet's worth of speculation, but early into the first day of the race (Saturday, March 7th) the USCG responded to multiple capsizes, and by their own words "rescued 12 people from the water" and terminated the race. There are natural questions about the factors surrounding that decision that will bear out in the coming weeks and months, this email isn't about that. We wanted to inform you all about some of the details about the R2AK:

*Since we launched the event to the world last summer we have been working closely with USCG, Canadian Coast Guard, and 7 other local and regional response agencies to co-develop the race management expectations.
*Every agency has been incredibly helpful (even through skepticism!) and we should be finalizing the details of the official US Coast Guard "marine event permit" this week.
*In the unlikely event that the R2AK is cancelled or terminated by a third party we'll be issuing full refund to participants.
*We do have insurance for the race.
*As the race packet and website both state, the first stage of the race to Victoria will have a race specific safety structure of support vessels.

Please contact us if you have any specific questions, and please think some good thoughts for all of the Everglades Challenge participants and organizers. They are a truly important part of our weird little world, and it's no doubt a stressful week for them.

Be good (but not too good)
- Jake

"After numerous debriefs with safety personnel, race staff, event sponsors and others, we have decided to move forward with a second Race to Alaska. Besides, there may have been a full-blown revolt if we hadn't run this again," said Jake Beattie, Executive Director of the Northwest Maritime Center, R2AK's host organization. The race will start on June 23 in Port Townsend, WA; all other details regarding the second iteration of the race will be released on September 11 at the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival. "There will be changes and some fun additions to the 2016 challenge," says Race Boss Daniel Evans, on board for his second year as Race Director.
not seen the announcement on this forum so i though it would be good to share an email I received yesterday (13 Aug. '15) -

The first-ever R2AK Blazer Party will also be held at the Wooden Boat Festival; this event is free to racers and $25 for all others. Attendees can come rub elbows with R2AK teams, see the second place steak knives, and be the first to hear the details of next year's event. In mock formality, there will be a rack of thrift store R2AK-emblazoned jackets for the racers to wear (racers who completed both stages of the race get one with two arms).

For more information about the Race to Alaska, visit www.r2ak.com, and attend the R2AK Blazer Party at the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival on September 11!

Thanks for following the Race to Alaska!
