Flareguns and firearms into Canada. Equip. on plane.

Post by JollyRoger »

Trying to find out if there is something that I may be missing as far as bringing flaregun and handgun into Canada. It looks like the rules are fairly straight forward. The flares are not registered so nothing needed. Handguns must have a 4 inch barrel but are restricted, otherwise not allowed. Hunting guns are allowed. Best way to get a gun there is to ship it.
Just planning and making sure that I am not missing something. Anyone have anything to offer for advise? I have not been able to find anything on concealed
weapons permit.

What is allowed on a plane is a different story. It looks like I will be shipping most of my stuff out there instead of carrying it on the plane.

Hey, I know the rules pretty sparse but I don't think it's kosher to pick off the competition through small arms marksmanship, right guys? Right? Guys?

Flare gun into Canada, no problem.
Any guns at all, no.
Years ago you could say it's a sound signaling device and they may accept it but not today.
Buy one when you get to AK.

You don't really need a gun in Canada. In 50 years I've never felt the need to carry one. I've spent many un-armed days wandering the coast of BC sleeping near major animal trails with no sense of risk. In Canada, all you need is a two-4 of beer.

That's the spirit TC.
Mercy killings and sound signally are about the only uses I see the need for one.
I've got papers to have one but rarely feel the need to carry.
Being charged by a moose, bear or even a cougar are possible but likely about as remote as a lightning strike.
Oh, and then there's the chance of missing, or...
I need not go on.
Cheers!

P.S. Now once in AK, that's a different story.

Info for Airlines Flights
-Flare Guns - May be carried as checked baggage MUST be unloaded, packed in a locked hard-sided container, and declared to the airline at check-in. Read our section on Camping and Firearms & Ammunition section.
I was unaware of the locked container requirement.
Also -Self Defense Sprays - One 4 ounce (118ml) container of mace or pepper spray is permitted in checked baggage provided it is equipped with a safety mechanism to prevent accidental discharge. Self Defense Sprays containing more than 2% by mass of Tear Gas (CS or CN) are prohibited in Checked Baggage. For more information visit http://www.faa.gov., click on Passengers, then Preparing to Fly.
My Bear spray is 8 oz so....?
And something I did not know or expect-Strike-anywhere Matches - One book of safety (non-strike anywhere) matches are permitted as carry-on items, but all matches are prohibited in checked baggage. Lighters with fuel are prohibited in checked baggage. Gel-type candles are prohibited as checked or carry on. That seems strange.
I still have not found out about jetboil fuel canisters but I am guessing those will be a no as well.
So I am thinking that it is just going to be easier to ship equipment and supplies to port townsend ahead of time and not worry so much about the airlines where I can't even carry a candle and waterproof strike matches in a hypothermia kit.
Sound advice guys- no guns needed and if I do then no taking out the competition!
But seriously- thanks for the gun advice. I will not be "packing".
Oh...the two-4 of beer....that's a case right?

Found it.-Good section on camping equip here-http://www.tsa.gov/traveler-information/camping-gear
8 Oz bear spray and stove fuel is a no.

another option is to purchase the needed 'prohibited' items when you arrive in WA. the camping stuff is easy to find ... the 'super store' REI is in Seattle, in addition to the entire area around Puget Sound is filled with sporting goods stores.

for 'boating stuff' there is a West Marine in Port Townsend. items can be ordered and shipped to the PT store and then collected when you arrive.

another item that airlines don't like - the inflation CO2 canisters for inflatable life vests. Southwest airlines allowed these a few years ago if checked in your bag and you told the airlines the canisters were packed. even so, when i arrived at the airport i was flagged for extra security and at first the SW bag checker refused to accept the canisters even when i showed them a printed copy of their policy. after 20 minutes of them reading their own rules (both mine and then again on their own computer) and making multiple phone calls i was allowed to check the bag and board the flight. for the return i gave the canisters to a friend and bought new ones when i returned home. as i wrote above ... just easier to buy some things when you arrive at your destination.

Dog Spray beats Bear Spray

Post by Catguy »

Did a fair bit of research last year on Bear spray online and with experts in prep for some remote BC adventures.

Seems many expert Northern hunters use Dog Spray instead as it is a fraction of the cost, is the same chemical (just slightly more dilute), less customs hassle and more readily available.

Canadian "tyre" has one for about $10 CD, but I had to have them order it in advance.
