Rigging Video

Post by Brent65 »

OK Scampers,

I would love to see a video of someone rigging a scamp from the ramp. I know I've asked for this before, but no one has taken the time to shoot one. It doesn't need to be slick or edited...just showing all the steps from ramp to sailing. Might someone be able to do this? Josh, have I been patient enough? Simeon, how about it? Anyone else? Got a Gopro? Got an iPhone?

I'm assuming youtube would be the best place to post the video.

Lots of folks would love to see this done.

My SCAMP rigging is probably atypical in that I trailer with everything rigged. I have only to unstrap the hull, unstrap the mast & sail bundle from the crutches, plant the mast, & then tension the already rigged lazy-jacks. Down-haul, halyard, and main sheet are already in place. Of course, I also have to hang the rudder & insert the tiller, and make sure the cockpit drain plugs are installed :) That's about a 10 minute evolution with no spectators "helping".

I then take a bit of extra time to fill the water ballast at the ramp hose (if available) and tidy up the cockpit stowage stuff. The WB tank fill so quickly that you have to stay focused or risk a wet flooded cockpit

I'll try to video it someday soon...

Brent,

I know we've been promising a video for a long, long time :? Had high hopes of getting one last outing, but it didn't work out. Will still try to get one of Simeon's boat and also old #1 next time. —Josh

Simeon,
Did you make a custom cover for the entire ensemble? Your atypical setup will be identical to my set up also (maybe not that atypical). Can you travel distance with this setup? I like the way you don't need to remove everything, every time.

No cover, other than a custom sail cover over the boom/yard/sail bundle.

Furthest distance trailed one-way to-date has been about 100 miles.

Simeon,

Wow, that paint job looks to be holding up extremely well. I know I'm getting off topic, but what paint have you used and have you been happy with it. Also, are you happy that you painted the bottom vs graphite epoxy on the bottom? Just trying to learn everywhere I can.

Topsides and bottom, all Pettit Easypoxy, a one-part polyurethane topside paint improved by the addition of silicone for a brilliant shine and easy brushability.

Those photos are old but she still shines good enough for me.

I have touched up some scratches in the bottom paint, something I do in the garage a few times during the year.

The bottom undercoat I used before the Easypoxy was Interlux InterProtect 2000E (white base) two-part epoxy coating developed to protect fiberglass hulls from water absorption. Smelly stuff, expensive ($89/gallon-kit), but easy to use.

Can't comment on the graphite epoxy route other than I think it's a fine way to go. I did want a red bottom for Noddy.

Simeon,

Upon further scrutiny...do I see two holes in the wide aft sections of your skegs being used as tie downs? Clever. I like the idea. Any downsides to this...anyone?

Only downside I can see, beside the bending down under the trailer and the attendant back issues and bumped head, is the drop in speed due to increased turbulence at the holes. Might drop his speed by maybe a hundredth of a knot. But he probably has covers or plugs or something to solve that problem. Nice idea! --Will
