Re: Scamp #326 build, from plans.
Most folks utilize boarding lines attached to 2 cleats along the side deck of the boat. I used 1" webbing (more comfortable than rope) permanently attached to each side. I know this concept has been discussed in earlier post if you search for rescue lines. Howard also discussed a 12" line epoxied into the bottom of the center board for easy retrieval of the board...less rigid that an eye bolt...maybe less prone to catching on debris. Just a few thoughts...
Sounds like you learned a lot about your boat in that short outing. Also sounds like you'll be much better prepared next time. Good job

Dry suit make a lot of sense if you are going to sailing cold waters , the older you get the faster your energy ebbs away.ram wrote: I'd be interested to hear other capsize experiences and ideas on recovery. One opinion I've heard locally is just wear a dry suit and let it happen. Perhaps realistic, but takes some of the fun out.
One thing to remember is just how fast the boat is blown away from you even when inverted.A trailing line is not a silly idea.IMHO.

Ok. I just went thru and "bumped" all the capsize topics I could find. But, if you haven't, a read of the entire board is something I recommend. It's a little reality history of SCAMP.

Quick update ,
First sail this spring down here in NZ.The wind is still a little chilly but we managed.
Made many little changes since the build.Have removed all the reefing lines and now just pull down the reef points front and back to a hook attached fore and aft.
Installed little Honda clone 'Chonda' 160 inboard with outboard swing up leg.Never runs over 1/2 throttle even in worst conditions.
Have sealed up floor hatch in cuddy.
Sailing today with "look mum no hands"

Small upgrade.Tried various latches but none were working so installed some flush cabnet door latches on the seat and sole hatches.
Made of genuine rare earth Chinese plastic.Back in the day I seem to remember them being all metal but you cant fight progress.
They work well and the hatches remain semi water proof or should I say 'wash down ' proof and good enough to get you upright again should bad things happen.
