Building of SCAMP #349 "Argo" underway in Wisconsin, USA

Post by Jason Builder »

Hi Everyone,

I'm happy to announce that work has begun on SCAMP #349 in Wisconsin USA. She will be called "Argo". I have made the oars, and am now working on building the centerboard and rudder (from the foils kit bought from SCA). Next will be the spars, and by then it should be warm enough that I will be able to emerge from the basement and begin working in the garage on the hull. I will be buying the kit from SCA for this build. As I will be a weekend worker on this project, I anticipate the project will take 1.5 - 2 years.

Thanks in advance for your advice and feedback as I work through the build.

I like your oars, how long are oars, and how did you make them.

Jason,

Your oars look pretty sharp. I'm curious about your name "Argo". Is the name a tribute to the Argonauts? ...Or clever CIA missions? Either way, great name!

Hi! I was trying to think of a short name to go with this fine little craft, and as my name is Jason, I thought "Argo" would be perfect.....after Jason and the Argonauts.

The oars were glued up and carved from aspen (possibly not the best wood for oars). I fiberglassed the 1st 3' after the handle, for extra strength. Also fiber glassed the paddle tips.

I have started a build log which I will keep updated, at. http://Www.Argobuilder.com

Happy Sailing,

Jason

Just finished leathering the oars, so they are mostly done for the time being, and will be hanging around while I work on the boat. Fiberglassing rudder now, and I picked up the Sitka Spruce for the spars at McCormick Lumber in Madison, so I will be starting on the spars and mast fairly soon!

That is a nice job of stitching on the oars. I went to your web site you went on some nice adventures. I am familiar with the door county I lived there in Sturgeon Bay. During that time I never visited Washington Island so it was good to see your pictures. I see on your way back You past through Porte des Morts. That channel is well named. I see you made it alright.

I will have to bear in mind where you picked up Sita Spruce that is not available up here.

I will try to find on line "The legend of Port des Morts " and post it. A interesting story of a brave young Indian.

Thanks Brent! You have a good look'in craft there, and your website is great! Nice photo's and very useful information for me as someone with many questions. Thanks for putting the work into documenting your build.

Over winter, I am working through all the pieces I can build in the basement, with good progress made on mast, spars, carving wooden cleats, making deadlights, rudder, and centerboard. Update photo's below. I will have all that work done fairly soon and will probably have a month or so off before it warms up enough to begin epoxy work in the garage, which I am hoping to start in May. I think I'll order the SCA hatch kit and work on those in April.

I am having a great time with the build so far, and keeping up the build-log at http://www.argobuilder.com has been an additional way to have fun with the project (and to share progress with family/friends).

Happy Sailing,

Jason

Progress on mast and tiller (made it from solid hickory). Not many hours put in on the project in March due to work..... Getting ready for final three coats of epifanes on the spars.

Nice work, Jason… and great blog, too! I wonder how long that "hammered bronze" paint would stand up to the elements. It sure looks durable. Will you be able to store Argo in shelter?
