สวัสดีครับทุกคน,

Upon the first trailering of my SCAMP, it became clear that a crutch system to hold the spars and sail would greatly increase the convenience of trailering, vs strapping those components to the car. I built the mast/boom/yard crutch system below and tried it yesterday with good results through 3 hours of driving.

The forward crutch seats into the boat's mast trunk; aft crutch fits onto the gudgeons on the stern transom. The vertical posts that form the sides of the cradles are solid oak pins.

Hej Seglare,

It was a beautiful weekend for sailing here. Had a wonderful time sailing this little boat on Lac LaBelle in Wisconsin yesterday. It is very rewarding to sail a boat that I built and have everything work properly in the perfect winds. I had the occasion to sail to friends dock, and received the first photos yet, of my boat at sail, taken by someone not on the boat.

Thanks for the kind words Dale!

Hi Scampers,

Winter projects for the Argo will include adding a pull-cord to the bottom of the center board which would allow a sailor to retract the center board from outside the hull in the event of a capsize. Another project will be to add a cockpit tent but I am not a canvas worker and would prefer to buy the tent somehow. I would like to use the scamp for my yearly sailing trip with my brother, but the tent needs to seal out the bugs up here; there’s no way I’m going to use a non-sealed boom tent to just keep the rain off. I need to learn my options.

Jason - Argo looks so good! Sharp, handsome, and classy. The tanbark sail looks great with that warm brightwork. Nicely done.

Congratulations for the launch, Jason! Argo looks such a cool boat and I like its minimalistic navigation light system. What was the most challenging construction phase?

Hi Timo!

....that was google translate....how did it work for English to Finnish?

hi Timo! I have been woodworking for about 30 years, so the wood working part of the project was enjoyable and not a difficult bit of work. For someone new to wood working , I think the challenging parts would be the hollow wooden mast and steam bending the carlins. For me the challenging parts were those that were new to me, or that i didnt enjoy:
1) learning how to install nice finished epoxy fillets in a way that minimizes the need to smooth them out later.
2) patience with sanding and multiple coats of paint and varnish.
3) It was a challenge for me to have the wooden hull all perfect ane smooth, only to have to resand and re-fair it after epoxy and fiberglass.

The challenges provided new learning opportunities, and overall it was a great experience.
