Bunks or rollers

Post by Richie UK »

Hi All,
I've just bought a secondhand trailer ,my build is moving on well.
I am hopping for a spring 2017 launch.
The trailer is in very good condition and was used for a 14' rib.
The trailer has adjustable rollers and a adjustable axle also a long
draw bar .
Do I need to change the rollers for bunks ?
What seems to work better.

All my flat bottom boats have had bunks. Preferably a plywood deck with rollers at the back to start the roll off/on, set so they support the transom when the boat is resting on the platform. One big advantage of a platform is that I can walk out to the end and hook the boat on without getting my feet wet.

GigHarbor invented a 3roller system on the aft with a perpendicular bunk on the fore and a bumper on the winch pillar. Seems to work great for me. The skegs ride on the two outer rollers. The center roller guides the boat on to the trailer.

There are 3 minor problems:
1. if the tide is low, it sometimes is hard to get the initial curve of the skegs onto the rollers. And if misaligned, the steel roller holders can scratch up your skegs a bit.
2. the perpendicular bunk is too short.
3. (on my boat at least) the bumper on the pillar rubbed off some paint.

All three are easy to fix:
1. get the boat properly set before winching her up hard.
2. build the bunk up. I used latex lumber and cheap all-weather carpet from a local home store.
3. bend the bumpers down to match the angle of the bow and/or don't winch the bow all the way up to the bumpers.

I know you are in the UK and ordering a trailer from GHboats.com is probably not realistic. But for anyone else reading this, I really do recommend their trailer.

Hi All
Thanks for your ideas on the trailer ,Ive got some thinking to do.
Is there any photos of the GH boats trailer empty?
Also is there any info re: sizes ,so I can see how they have the trailer set up.

Simple homemade flatbed works well for me. Across the back of the frame I installed a split PVC tube over the angle iron piece to provide a slick bearing surface.
