Small boat adventurer, Howard Rice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard_Rice) flew over from Tokyo to test sail SCAMP. He set off from Boat Haven on a day that included snow flurries and overnighted at anchor on a night that reached down to 26º. Fortunately he was able to experience everything from ghosting conditions to a small craft advisory. His report will appear in the coming print magazine. —Eds

Now thats a story that I'm really looking forward to, Howard is one of the most experienced small boat cruisers ever, writes well, and a boat test from him has to be one of the better articles you could include in SCA, a real coup
Well done, and thanks Howard for taking the time and trouble to do that for us.

I've just had an email from Howard asking if I'd be available to answer questions on some aspects of the design. He had a really good time cruising the wee boat in temperatures that went well below what most of us would consider sailing in, and winds that went both very light and pretty strong. Howard is an extraordinarily experienced sailor, both big and small boats, could be considered a world ranked authority on small boat cruising and I'm hugely pleased that he loved the boat so much that he'll have one himself. His upcoming article in SCA is something that I'm really looking forward to reading.

John Welsford, with a big grin.

Hello All
Last December I had the opportunity to take Scamp out for a short test sail. As it turns out an ever increasing number of people seem interested in more detail regarding what I may have learned (based on the emails I have been receiving and notice from friends who have been receiving contacts from folks trying to figure out how to reach me by email or phone).

I am a bit busy traveling for work these days and therefore find it hard to answer each email. I have been traveling for work through the remote western Pacific islands (in fact I am in Guam today on my way to Pohnpei from Yap at this moment). I often do not have phone or email capability due to remoteness. I was staying with Yapese canoe carvers/sailors in the village of Mop and this means no easy communication.

So if it would be of help I am open to any questions sailors might wish to post here. This way more folks can join the discussion instead of waiting for an email from me. I will some have time in the next two weeks to try and answer direct emails if they are sent to howardr@ilookfar.com and then I am off traveling again. I am happy to answer when I can.

I may not have much to report about Scamp as you the readers of SCA seem a rather experienced group. I respectfully say I am also very open to learning through exchange of questions and information. Hopefully I may be able to shed a little light on the experience I had aboard Scamp.
I will be be capsize testing Scamp for Josh and Craig and hopefully taking her to sea to test her survival at sea in big air capabilities in just about four weeks when I return to Port Townsend (dry suit in hand this time).

I am also very familiar with the Scamp kit and plan set if that might be of interest to anyone.
Best to all,
howard
