SCAMPers:
I epoxied and then got ready to paint the underside of the seat tops. They really don't need paint since they won't show, but I decided to paint them anyway. So, after washing with water and then using a scotch brite pad, drying off, sanding, I painted with Rustoleum oil based enamel. One seat top dried properly with the first coat, but the other seat top is still tacky. Figures. Just like my experience in the bilge when I painted that. So, I think despite my efforts there must be some amine blush there wrecking the paint. I'll sand it off and paint again.
But, this has me thinking about when I paint the important areas!! Howard and others have recommended against using primer. They feel it is not necessary. I plan to paint with 1 part polyurethane like Brightsides, or Easypoxy. Now, I look at a primer like Pre-kote, which is thick and will help hide my poor building, but unless I am reading something wrong, it says not to use over clear epoxy. So, what is the story here? Is my problem simply the Rustoleum? Should I not use primer on the hull? Or if I prime, what primer would be best to make my job look good and protect me from amine blush issues??

Daniel,
Did you by chance use a mild soap when you washed with water? If so, this should have removed any blushing. You might try using a heat lamp in this area and giving it a day or so to cure. With limited air flow, the area might simply still be curing. I didn't use primer on Shackleton and wouldn't use it next time if I were to build again. I just like the idea of paint going directly onto the sanded epoxy. I've used lots of Rustoleum paint, so I don't think the paint is the problem. Just me 2 cents

I did not use mild soap. Perhaps I should have done that. One of the seat tops dried perfectly quickly. But the other did not. This happened to me when I painted the bilge too, so somehow I did not get the blush off despite my attempts. It is cool in the garage right now, so a good reason there is blush. OK, I will sand it off, clean with water with mild soap (dish soap?), and try again.

Daniel,
Think of blush as a thin coat of oil. Any mild soap on a wet rag should do the trick. Don't get discouraged...it could've been the entire deck. Don't ask me how I know this.

I can well imagine...
I had to sand off a bunch of it in the bilge myself last year. OK, I will sand this small section, wash with soap and water, and repaint. Figures. This build would be faster if I knew what I was doing!! But, just like sailing, it is about the journey...
