Tosh "Scamp 303 sails for the first time

Post by Richie UK »

Hi all ,
Tosh has had her first sail ,sailed her three times the first two were in a lot of wind .we reefed her and sailed very well .
We then sailed her in very little to no wind .
When we sailed on port up wind ,she sailed well ,but on starboard
if I sheeted in to go up wind she bore away and would not responded to her
rudder .when I let the sheet go until the sails were not pulling she responded
again .Any ideas ?
Here are a few pics of us at Bala lake .
Regards .Richie

Richie,

Bravo! Well done! I never tire of seeing these boats get launched.

As for your helm issues, from the picture it looks like your pick point (where the halyard attaches to the yard) is too close to the middle of the yard. This is putting too much sail area in front of the mast, which moves the center of effort too far forward.

When you sail on "port", do you mean a port tack, where the boom is on the port side of the boat?

Hi Keith.
Ya boom on port side .I have sailed for years ,but not with a balanced lug rig.
I know you can steer a boat using the fore sail and main sail.
Thinking about what you said I realise the pick up Point on the yard is critical .
Do you move the point in defferent wind strength ?.

Richie,

Once the pickpoint is correct SCAMP is remarkably balanced through all three reef points.

Michael Storer has some lug rig performance tips that involve moving the boom fore and aft but I don't recall anything about changing the pickpoint, probably because you aren't going to be dropping the rig in a race to mess with it. :-)

Congratulations! It must be very gratifying to get your boat launched. I know it is disappointing to have some challenges but I am sure you will get them sorted.

Hi all ,
Moved the pick up point on the yard and she is sailing fine now .
Just getting to know her .
Had a problem getting her on to the trolley the centre board was not all the way up.
I've now marked the uphull sheet ,so I now know it's all the way up.
A big thank you to the forum for the help over the last two and half years.

Richie,

Glad you got her "tuned" :-). Now, as Howard would say, "sail the paint off her"! We look forward to hearing of your adventures!
