Rigging Thoughts

Post by Brent65 »

Fellow Scamp Sailors,

I've just uploaded a post showing how I plan to rig my next Scamp build named Hagoth. I've included a link below if you have interest in checking it out.

Your comments and suggestions are always welcome.

Nice work Brent! I took a ramble through some of your thoughts. What an opportunity to incorporate your knowledge in building a second scamp. Zephyr was started at the first scamp camp and that was way back when all the 'mods' were just ideas. I incorporated some but many great ones surfaced after I had already launched. A year ago my spring refit involved putting in a footwell and lazarette (both have worked out exceptionally well). Just yesterday I changed up my downhaul from single and fiddle blocks on the cabintop to double blocks between the cabintop and the boom. I also set up snap shackles so I can easily detach the rig from the mast for trailering. Sometimes I just shake my head at how I can put up with stuff for so long! Too busy having fun sailing I guess.

At this point I don't think I'll be building another scamp but in the depths of winter I did buy Welsford Penguin plans and there will be some scamp in her build. Please do keep us updated on new posts on your build.

Keith,

Thanks for your comments and encouragement.

I would love to see some photos of your footwell and lazarette if you get the chance to snap a few. Also, does this mean you will be building a penguin? Tremendous task!

Glad to hear your still enjoying your Scamp. I'm really trying hard to work out a few of the kinks I experienced the first time.

I will be shortly (tomorrow) rigging my scamp for the first time. Is there a helpful diagram or video or anything... that you might point a nubie too? Thanks!

Bark,

There exists no videos that I'm aware of and no definitive way of rigging this competent little ship. There seems to be different paths for different folks. I'm sure this sounds frustrating, but it's the truth.

I would recommend you first try the described approach outlined on page #8 of the plans. I would have done well to follow this advise on my first Scamp. Instead I tried a multitude of alternate approaches and reached beyond the mark. The described approach in the plans will be an excellent starting point. From there, you may make some changes that fit your personal voyaging strategy.

Best of luck on your maiden voyage

Maiden voyage (on Lake Superior!) was a huge success, but... largely (only) because another scamp owner met me and helped us rig and sail our boat; then the two boats headed out together. Since then have rigged it a few times successfully; not a intuitive thing at all (or so it seemed to me) but when set up properly, works very well!
