FIRST Kit Build

Post by danphy »

Hard to believe...FIRST SCAMP KIT BUILD...Started Dec. 2010/ finished June 1st 2011...Kit #6 (my choice...I think #2 & #3 were already committed to Howard...I chose #6 !!)....No manual...BUT I had Kees ("You Don't Need a Manual...You Have Me!!"....also I had the "Able Bodied" Simeon writing, photographing, helping and advising me for 21/2 weeks....Scott built the spars.....SCAMP #6 B. Frank now lives down in Panama City, FL. with my good friend Steve Haines...I get down that way now and then to sail with him.....Dilemma?? Do I build another Kit/ or do I go the Gig Harbor route??...Not sure if I still have the resolve to build...Dan

build if you want the experience of building - an answer you already know about Dan as you been down this road before ;-)

a couple of good used SCAMPs are on the market (wood/kit built and GHBoatworks).

or to get a SCAMP 'just like you want' - Dave at GH is a good honest boatbuilder.

Dan,

I went through this exact same scenario before beginning to build Hagoth. At first I really didn't want to do the exact same boat all over again. I almost build a First Mate from Ross Lillistone, but the more I thought about it, I really wanted a sea worthy, relf recoverable boat I could sleep on and voyage on. After days and months of searching, I couldn't find anything I liked better than the Scamp. I'm doing several things different from my first build to make the boat even more suited to my particular needs. Your experience building and sailing B. Frank will be invaluable if you decide to build again. FWIW, I'm having a blast building my second Scamp.
