Footwell/Filler Board System

Fellow Scampers,

I've spent some time and energy regarding how to store the all important filler boards required for sleeping 2 aboard Scamp. I thought I would share my ideas for any who might be interested.

I'm not recommending this to others, rather just sharing what I'm up to with the building of Hagoth.

Hi Brent,

I am getting ready to start building #337, from plans. The mid-west weather has just put a two week delay in my trip to pickup the plywood. My boat will primary be day sailed with hopefully an occasional overnight.

I really like your footwell and filler board storage system. I plan to implement something of that nature on my boat. I doubt my grate will turn out anywhere near as nice as yours, but with luck it should be quite presentable. I am currently not planning on a Lazarette. Is there sufficient space to store enough boards to fill the space between the entire length of the seats without building a lazarette?

Would it be possible get some dimensions? Such as how long is the opening? The side pieces that support the floor, are they made from 9mm ply or did you use something thicker?

I also plan to implement Eric's Centerboard pin system. I have talked to a couple of local machine shops about making the pin. One shop had an 8 piece minimum, the other will do one-off jobs, but mentioned the per unit price would drop if I could get the quantity up. I did not have dimensions at the time I talked to them so there was no point in discussing a real price. How long is the threaded portion of the Pin? What diameter is the threaded bolt that is screwed into the 1/2 inch centerboard pin? In your blog you reference it as 1/8 inch and 1/4 inch.

After closer examination of Eric's tread I found all of the information I need regarding the centerboard pin. Lesson here, read more, type less. :)

There is sufficient space to store all the filler boards if you utilize a grate and build a lazarette. Otherwise, you would need to store some of the boards in a storage compartment.

My opening measures 59,1/2"The side pieces that support the floor, are they made from 2 layers of 9mm ply did you use something thicker?If you are referring to the vertical side pieces located on both starboard and port side under the cockpit floor that support the edges of the cockpit floor, they are made from 2 layers of 9mm plywood glued together.

Can you please tell me the width (fore and aft) of your lazarette top? I an closing in on this stage and am shamelessly copying you on this modification. Cheers!

Buster, The fore/aft length of the lazarette is dependent on you height. You need enough room to sleep solo on the cockpit sole. For me, this takes 6'5", hence my fore/aft lazarette length is 21.5". If I were shorter than 6', I may have made the lazarette a bit wider. But, this dimensions allows for a regular sleeping pad to fit on the cockpit floor, hence makes a lot of sense.

Hi Brent,

No I am not sure. When I first got my plans, I had a hair-brained idea of using the lazarette for a motor mount area. The idea being to modify a trolling motor such that the motor head could be mounted to a plate in a fixed position. Then cut a hole on the center-line in the bottom of the boat between the last bulkhead and the transom that would match the mounting plate of the motor. I also thought I would make a blank plate that could be installed in the hole whenever the motor is not in use. When the motor was not in use it would be stored in the lazarette. I assume I would need to seriously beef up the bottom of the boat in that area and use some sort of gasket to seal the hole to minimize water ingress. But it was just an idea and I have not pursued the idea.

Going to Madison Wisconsin to Pick up the Plywood & Spruce on Apr 23.
