Shipping a Scamp Acoss the world?

Post by fred4win »

I am weighting my options on taking my Filipino Built Scamp #160 Back to Chicago in the US. I am attached to her, an built with my own hands so you can understand how attached you can be. Still solid as a rock with no problems. I really do not want to get into building a new one there...sanding and epoxy is just to much pain for me. I am an ex pat spending 6 months in the US and the other time in the Philippines. Plenty of ocean here but weather is very nasty for sailing, and hardly no safe harbors. That is one option and others can be buying a use Scamp or Gig harbor ready made and so on. Looking for some salty thoughts and feed back on this, plus what kind of expense and time in shipping.

shipping isn't a challenge ... how much money are you willing to spend? how quickly to you want the boat to go from A to B?

IMO, based on shipping i've done with the Sage boats you are looking at $5000 or so cost ... but you may be able to get it done for less if you are able to make a custom crate that can then be loaded with other crates into a container (ie, become part of a partial load). such method is a lot cheaper but the time to go from A to B is MUCH MUCH and even MUCH longer.

shipping the boat back and forth will quickly exceed her $ value.

your trailer ... don't know if you can get the OKed for use on US roads?

I was hoping for small door to door container with only the boat inside, no mast but paddle, trailer not included. Willing to do for around $5000 or so. Time not important, no hurry...but wife wanting to stay longer here in the Philippines now may change all that now. So much for the snow bird 6 months here and six months there I guess.
