And still more

File comment: Cleat in place. This is after cleanup and a small fillet between the cleat and the side of the centerboard trunk. I purposely did not glue in the outboard centerboard trunk section at this time because I wanted to make sure I got a good seal on the edges of the cleats. Also with allow me to dry fit the bushings for the centerboard pin and install the copper pipe to hold the up-haul line and make sure they are all well sealed before finally attaching the outboard section.

File comment: Bulkhead 4 is the last piece attached. You can see a few clamps. In the end I only had to use 4 clamps to hold pieces in place, with light pressure

Getting closer. Attaching bulkhead 4 to the uprights

File comment: Forward centerboard cleat, again with small fillet to inboard panel. You can see where I had to remove a bit more of the hatch backing plate to make room for the outboard piece of the centerboard trunk. I was sure I measured this correctly but then again I am sure the ladies still find me attractive. And to think they let me do surgery.

More centerboard trunk.

File comment: Without putting in the outboard section of the trunk, I needed a way to keep pressure on the inboard section to make sure it sealed with the hull. The cedar blocks originally intended to space the sides and a couple of wedges did the trick.

Finally done.

File comment: Detail on fillets. Taping takes time but I cannot draw a straight line and tend to be messy so I get a much neater looking product this way and don't end up with epoxy smeared on everything.

Thank you very much for the step by step. I am behind you by several steps. I got to say those are some neat fillets.

QUESTION - I am about to glue in bulkheads 1, 2, 3 and the stem. Page 38 in the manual comments to be sure to keep the scuppers on the bottom of the stem clear for side to side drainage. Should there not also be similar scuppers in bulkhead 2 to allow fore and aft drainage as well? I assume you don't need them in bulkhead 3 as you could mop up any water in the "cabin"
through the hatches in that bulkhead.

Thanks

Dan

Dan,

The plans Sheet-7 clearly show side to side scuppers in the stem just forward of bulkheads 2, 3 & 4.
Sheet-3 does not indicate any fore-aft scuppers in bulkhead 2, the only one where it might be applicable, as you point out.

I remember pondering that during the build of Dan Phy's SCAMP #6 and my guru Kees dismissed it. That area forward of B-2 is reachable through the cut-outs if using a sponge but not something that would be easy. Would it be that their inclusion would fairly significantly impact the bonding surface area between B-2 and the hull bottom?

I may be inclined to include them on my build.

Perhaps John Welsford or others would like to weigh in on this one.
Inquiring minds would like to know!

Cheers,
Simeon

I decided to put scuppers in bulkhead 2 before glue-up. If it turns out they are a problem, easier to fill them in later than to add them.

File comment: Clamped bulkhead 2 to drill press and used 1 7/8 Forstner to cut scuppers approximately same size as pre-existing ones in stem.

Dry fitting bulkheads 2 & 3, stem

File comment: Support wedged between bulkheads 2 & 3 removed gap, not a lot of pressure needed. Cleat in place - was not sure how to reach this from underneath as very little room between bottom sheet and building jig, so used 3 by 1/2 inch screws from cleat into sheet. They do not penetrate the bottom.

Dry fitting Bulkhead 1

Attachments:
File comment: Getting this all lined up with the stem in place seemed difficult so removed stem and started by adding cleats on either side of stem. Clamped n place and placed 1 1/2 inch screws across stem into cleat on other side. Placed 2 from one side and 3 from other.
