Builder Paul Lohr is considering a junk rig for his SCAMP. He sent this sketch and note below. —Eds

The attached shows the junk sail overlaid on the balanced lug (dotted
line), with the same centres of effort. Mast needs to extended by 20"
500 mm.

Sail Area: 9.1314 sq m (approx 100sq ft)
Panel width: 500mm
Panel Length: 2500mm
P/B = 0.2
Aspect Ratio = 1.89

All based on "Practical Junk Rig" by Hasler and McLeod

Paul

I'd love to see it. I've always been a fan of the junk rig. Go Paul!!!

Here's an article on junks from Popular Mechanics magazine Sept 1963. Paste the link into your browser. The article starts on pg 102; make sure you jump to page 200 to finish the article:

Incidently, there's some great stuff in this issue.

Cheers,
Simeon

I thought the junk rig looked really good on the hull, as shown. I used to pass a lot of junks (well, a lot of junks for Galveston Bay) when I worked in the marina's around Clear Lake. They never seemed to go out and you might see a junk rig about once a year on the bay or lake.

But they had real junk bodies/hulls. It was reading Annie Hill that made me like the junk rig and seeing some in videos on internet.

I also hope Paul will build this Scamp with the junk sails.

Red ones.

Michael Rogers in the UK has fitted a junk rig to his Swallow Boats double ender and feels the rig has been a great success.

I use SailCut4 to design and cut lug rig sails. as the name suggests it is designed to draw 4 sided sails, which is great for the lug rig and not so good for the junk rig whose radial batten head creates 6 sides.

Here is my best attempt. Can only manage a high roach leach but if anyone does want to make their own SCAMP sail please let me know and I will lay out the lug sail. You just input the cloth panel widths you have and the software draws all the panel developments for you.

This is a screen dump of the rotated junk sail to show the camber and draft.

and here is a drawing of SCAMP's lug rig laid out in 4 panel vertical cut.

and as an example here are the individual panel layouts which SailCut4 produces from that sailplan

Michael Rogers has been in touch to say how well he feels the junk rig would suit SCAMP. He pointed me to this superb resource on designing and making a junk rig for your boat.

and this link on making a cambered junk sail

So, thanks Michael.
