Build #179 to start
Hi all,
I've just taken delivery of plans set #179. I've spent the last three weeks poring over this forum as well as the WoodenBoat forum, sucking up as much info about SCAMP as I can hold in my head at any time. Just under two weeks ago I succumbed to the lust and ordered my plans. I'm so in lust with this design it is close to obscene.
I live in a suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. I'm aware there are at least two other sets of plans sold in my state but I am yet to make contact with them. If you're reading this and you're one of those other South Aussie SCAMPers please message me.
I have a very cheeky question for the SCA peoples: I have access to a large CAD plotter/printer. Is there any chance of getting access to files so I can print out full-size templates of the components? PDF or STEP or etc? Bit of a big ask, I know, but if the answer is no I lose nothing, if yes I gain about two weeks progress.
This is a lovely forum. Looking forward to showing some progress soon.

Re: Build #179 to start
Hello Bruce!
Congratulations on receiving your plans!
My brother Mark and I were at the Wooden Boat Festival in Port Townsend and plans #179 were sitting on the table at the SCA booth. Mark was torn about purchasing them- 1979 was his birth year and he thought it'd be fun to build a boat with a symbolic number.
He'll be thrilled that they were shipped near Adelaide. He spent some time there and has many fond memories of that part of the world. We'll be wishing you the very best on your build!

I've been following your blog. Rio looks great! Tell Mark I'll try to do his plans justice. I have some crazy ideas that I may keep from the forum until I prove to myself whether they work or not. Don't tell Kenjamin!!
All the best from South Ozzie,
Bruce

Yay Bruce! Welcome! I look forward to posts of your progress. Don't be shy
I'm not thinking that the copyright holders would want to part with the electronic files (I know I wouldn't). You might want to email Josh at SCA and ask him if he has any interest in printing full size templates and selling them.
I bet the shipping would be prohibitive to Australia, but having started the kit at SCAMP Camp #1 (and having built from plans before), the kit is worth every PENNY! Maybe Josh could make a business deal with a CNC company in Australia.

Re: Build #179 to start
Hi Bruce. Exciting that #179 will be given life. I don't remember how any plans are sold now, I figure it is over 180 with 7 launched to date. Because of the SCAMP Camps, my guess is that next season that number may well go up by three or four times that. Josh hasn't posted your #179 location on the roster in connection with the SCAMP Community Map yet and he shows #170 twice in two different locations. (Maybe Josh can shed light on that). But I'm sure he will get to it. He is one busy fellow. Yes do send us postings and photos. And tell us when you decide what your color scheme will be. There is thread for that too. And, in case your fellow SCAMPers in your state don't read the forum, you could ask Josh to email them and provide them with your contact info if you so chose and if Josh is amenable. Best wishes,

Re: Build #179 to start
I bought my first two sheets of 9mm ply today and I'm preparing to make some component pieces.
I'm going to experiment with making some cabin and deck panels up with Western Red Cedar strips. I have some cedar in 42mm wide x 3000mm long x 3.5mm thick which I will be edge gluing into sheets 3.5mm thick and laminating in 2 and 3 laminations thick to use in lieu of 6mm and 9mm thick ply respectively. First job is to make a test panel or two and test them for stiffness, flexure/fracture tendency, density. I'll be trying epoxy to glue them. If it works OK I'm hoping to do the cabin top and sides, deck and coamings, which will be left as brightwork. Everything else is to be painted plywood as per usual build.

Re: Build #179 to start
I've made test panels of WRC for the cabin top and sides. They are stiff and strong enough for the job and they look pretty good. I'm now making the coamings and will also do the fore-deck, which I'll join to ply panels for the long side decks.
I've made a quick video of my boat shed (man cave). I don't know about attaching links to pics and videos so I'll see if I can figure it out.

Thanks for posting the video! It's nice to see the workspace, and your very nice laminations for the cabin top and sides. She'll be really pretty with those finished bright, very distinctive!

Here's the next video of progress. All of the cedar bits have now been made up of edge glued and laminated strips.
