Red Lantern Rally

Post by Editors »

Hi guys,

So we haven't set a firm itinerary yet, but we've picked the dates for a formal SCAMP rendezvous. We're thinking August 16-17 in Port Townsend. These dates fall on the weekend in the middle of the SCAMP CAMP, so it will be a nice opportunity for Camp builders to see lots of SCAMPs under sail and also a chance for Rally attendees to visit with new SCAMP builders, and designer/instructor John Welsford, and adventurer/instructor Howard Rice, both of whom will be teaching at CAMP.

Have received enthusiastic endorsements of this general idea from John and Howard. Howard has also kindly volunteered to help coordinate some of the class events, races, etc. We've discussed a possible Friday night potluck where everyone can meet and greet, a short destination cruise one day (perhaps the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding campus) and some racing. Racing might include some traditional races but also more SCAMP-like courses :-) We've also discussed establishing a perpetual trophy of some kind.

So feel free to jump in with your ideas, suggestions, and an indication as to whether you think you might be able to attend. Between this and a likely Colorado event, the SCAMP class will really begin to take form. —Eds

Ah, sounds like fun.... But about 100 years ago, wouldn't a "Red Light rally" have had a completely different meaning? Especially in the rootin tootin whaling town of Port Townsend?

If there will be anchor-outs a few beach boat skiff's would be handy. I have one scruffy but serviceable 8 footer and possibly an aluminum canoe that I can leave on the beach for anyone's use.

Nice poster! Sure hope somebody takes a lot of pictures of the event and posts them as it's (like Colorado) kind of a far piece from Florida. Maybe someday there'll be an East coast event.
