This spring I hope to hold a Boat Naming Ceremony for my Helsen 22. However, although the boat is actually 45 years old there is no record that it has ever been named before. There was no name on the hull nor was there any indication there ever was a name. Personally, I can't imagine allowing a boat to go unnamed and therefore unloved for 45 years. (But then again I can't imagine the $50,000.00 derelicts one sees in every marina).

So, my question is should I merely assume the boat was named at one point but has been lost to the mist of time. Or that it has never been named and therefore a Boat Naming Ceremony rather than a Renaming Ceremony should be conducted (the renaming ceremony appears to be a lot more fun!!)

Thanks

The increasing problem with the ceremony is to find a red head virgin willing to pee from the bow while you will sail three circles in front of your sailing club! :|

Its always something isn't it?

Besides, we now also have that pesky Environmental Protection Agency to contend with. Can't dump raw sewage in the lake you know.

I say do which ever is more fun. I think the boats just appreciate the attention, and they don't really care about the specifics.

As I understand it - the first step is to remove ALL indications of the prior name - so you're ahead of the process.

Now you just have to introduce the boat as it's christened name to the God or gods of your choice.

You have to do it right because if you don't the boat will sink. So be careful.

In any case, I strongly believe you need to appease the boat naming gods, as they can be pretty fickle. Risking issues when you're farther from shore than you can swim back to is never a wise strategy.
