Finding Pax
Kaci Cronkhite
197 pages
This is the story of Kaci Cronkhite's quest to find the history of a 32 (I think) foot Spitzgatter double ender sailboat built in 1936 in Denmark. Ms. Cronkhite found the boat when a message appeared in her email saying "You should look at this boat". The book is a love story between this woman and "Pax". After restoring the boat she set about trying to learn as much about its history as possible, travelling all the way to Denmark and meeting a member of the family that originally commissioned the boat.
The book is extremely well written and frankly inspiring. For those of us who believe that a sailboat is a living breathing creature you must also believe the boat has a right to know its own history. The book has inspired me to seek out information on my Helsen 22 (not nearly as romantic as an 80 year old gaff rigged canoe stern wooden boat but she is alive as well). I am much more fortunate since the designer of my boat is still alive and well in St Petersburg Florida (Jopie Helsen, owner of Sailors Wharf Marina) and I have been able to get some information from him.
Small Craft Advisor has stocked the book and I heartily recommend you read it.
