Speaking of gaff rigs does anyone have any ideas if a AMF Sunbird 16 can be rerigged with a gaff rig? The shorter mast would make it unnecessary for me to keep the boat in a slip (due to a motorcycle accident I can't lift the Sunbird's mast by myself and don't want to depend on strangers to help me)

I am no expert but my opinion is that a Gunter rig, being very similar to a marconi rig, would be perfectly OK. The center of effort will not be drawn back like a normal gaff rig sail would do and you will not need to compensate with a bowsprit. :)

Was intrigued by the conversation. Several years ago I saw pictures of a montgomery 15 or 17 that had been converted to what the owner called a gaff rig. I think it was an SCA or Watercraft(British magazine) article.

Found this very enlightening discussion on gaff vs gunter.

Sounds like a folding gunter would be the way to go. You would likely have to change the shape of the Jib to account for shorter mast.

There it is. As I mentioned, a bowsprit is necessary in order to balance the center of effort. It works!

I still prefer the Gunter rig. ;)

Though I know very little with regard to boat design, I tend to agree with Michel. I would not expect the gunter ( aka High Peaked gaff) would be close to the characteristics of your current marconi rig. It should allow you to lower your mast height.

Is it just me or the boom of that gaff really high? Seems to negate the lowering the center of effort.

See the website on the Doughdish (copy of the Herreshoff 12 1/2. The sail height is about the same in my opinion

Sorry I really need to learn to proof read. I meant to write this with out the word "not".

Meaning that I think that a gunter rig should perform about like your current marconi.

I would not classify the rigs of the Dougdish or the modified Montgomery shown in this thread as Gunter rigs, but rather just as a gaff rig. Gunter to me means the spar is nearly vertical.
