According to the Washington State PTA guidelines for local councils and ATPs (2018), the position of the Washington State PTA is that “disruptions to the education system, in the form of work stoppages and/or strikes, are often detrimental to the well-being of the children and families concerned.” The Ontario Primary Education Teachers` Union has reached a preliminary agreement with the province. Teachers did not gain 30 minutes of preparation for primary school teachers, which union leaders had gone on strike to try to win. The demand seemed to graze the already tense discussions. Lightfoot said she would not stop teaching for it. Teachers returned to school on Friday after an 11-day strike. They had gathered in the snow and rain until union officials and municipal officials reached an agreement to raise teachers` salaries and bring a social worker and a nurse to each school. Some of the most ambitious proposals by teachers, such as the city`s requirement to expand affordable housing, have not made the cut. But the struggle between the teachers and the city was much more than that. During the two-week strike, masses of teachers in red T-shirts took to the streets of Chicago, pecked at some of the 500 schools in the city, and organized rallies and marches in downtown Chicago. Chicago woman Jackie Rosa thanked the teachers for their “fearless struggle” and the courage to stick to an agreement. The exact details of the agreement remained informed as the strike continues, although the two sides have shared some highlights in recent days. So what do we know? An agreement was reached over the weekend and teachers resumed work on Monday, October 28.
“With this agreement, we can now return to what we all love to do – working with colleagues and families to improve the lives of students and help them reach their full potential every day,” Superintendent Michael Welch said in a statement. Union members voted on 30 October in favour of a provisional agreement with the city, which ended the strike the following day. But the contract was not official until the union`s more than 25,000 members voted. In the 2017/2018 school year, the state`s average base salary was $56,022. The average total salary was $71,683, including additional local funds. The total salary includes teachers who take on additional tasks such as teaching summer school or coaching a sport. New national averages funded by the state are $71,711 for 2018-19 and $73,283 for 2019-20, with no additional salary for teachers in additional roles. The state has recently changed the way it allocates funding for teachers` salaries to districts.
It now offers an average basic salary per teacher, adapted from a regionalization factor and, in some districts, an experience factor. In 2018-19, districts received between $65,216 and $80,868 per teacher in state-funded salaries for each teacher they receive in the state funding formula. The amount of teachers` salaries each district receives depends on the regionalization factor of a district.
