SCAMP CAMP

by · August 10, 2012

The Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding’s big group-build of SCAMPs is well along already with the first garboard planks being fitted on all 10 boats. Below are a few photos from the first couple of days down the Northwest Maritime Center. We’ll see if we can get Howard Rice or John Welsford to post a few comments on a regular basis until the CAMP concludes on the 17th. —Eds (Photos by Marty Loken and Debra Colvin)

    Hello All
I am now able to access this SCAMP Camp blog and plan to update each day with a few photos and progress reports.
Yesterday was another big day capped off with the hanging of the second plank. The builders have been working hard but happy. John Welsford took three people out sailing aboard SCAMP last evening, which gave me the chance to make a run back to Pete’s house to fetch my computer projector. Keith (one of the builders) bought pizza and we convened at the Maritime Center for a Cape Horn Solo presentation and technical talk.

Back to the evening SCAMP sail. The wind piped up and John (whom I trust implicitly with SCAMP #1) brought her in to an extremely tight dock. He and I have discovered we not only sail small boats in the same style but we communicate without speaking. He hook gybed and parked like he had sailed the boat for years but he hasn’t. In fact last night was only his second time with hand on helm aboard SCAMP. Nice work John.

SCAMP #1 is still in the water and today we will sail her again with students aboard.
The other day I had four adults aboard and with water ballast we roughly calculated her payload was over 900 pounds (she weighs in at 425 pounds empty). She handled the weight and sailed just fine.

All for now as breakfast (with our hosts Pete and Helen Leenhouts) is on the table and another very fun and fulfilling day building boats is ahead.

Check in later today for photos.
    Best,
    howard
ps: Kees we miss you here at the Maritime Center!
